St. Simoen Monastery
Do you love to meander around old ruins whilst learning some really interesting facts then you must visit St. Simeon Monastery in Aswan. The Monastery was built by monks providing accommodation for approx.. 300 monks who used it to travel to Nubia in groups to convert the Nubians to christianity. You can still see graffiti on the walls of the last Pilgrim Room which was left by a Muslim Pilgrim shortly before the Monastery was destroyed.Legend had it that whilst Simoen was praying he had a tendancy to fall asleep so he used to fasten his beard to the ceiling above his head in case he fell asleep during prayer sessions!!! So come and enjoy.
